Your AI research assistant
Finish your thesis with everything you’ve read at your fingertips. Highlight what you read and citegeist connects it into quotes, notes and links, and an AI agent that knows all of it helps you plan and write.

For macOS on Apple Silicon. Free and open source under Apache-2.0. Step-by-step guide
01 Library
Every paper, card and note in here is a file. You can open the folder in Finder.
Your library is a folder on your Mac.
Paste a DOI, arXiv link, ISBN or URL, or drop a PDF into the window. citegeist looks up the metadata at Crossref, OpenAlex, arXiv and the German National Library, fetches an open-access PDF when one exists and converts it into text with page references.
Imports from Zotero, BibTeX, RIS and CSL-JSON bring your collection along. The folder opens as an Obsidian vault and syncs through iCloud, Dropbox or git.
02 Reading
I keep the printed page number with every quote.
Every highlight becomes a quote card.
Select a passage in the PDF or in the text view and choose Quote. citegeist saves the exact wording with the printed page number, and an AI paraphrase follows a few seconds later.
One click copies a card as a verbatim or an indirect citation. Quick insert opens your cards with a hotkey and pastes the citation into the app you are writing in.
03 Planning
Tell me what you noticed, and I’ll write it into the chapter it belongs to.
The planning agent finds the literature and builds your plan with you.
Literature search
Enter a topic, and citegeist searches OpenAlex, arXiv and Semantic Scholar. It scores every paper from 0 to 100, verifies each DOI and sorts the result into peer-reviewed papers, preprints and grey literature. A saved search runs as an alert and puts new papers into your inbox.
Research plans
A plan holds the outline of your proposal or paper, with a purpose and a status for every chapter. The agent notes your insights in the right chapter and links them to their sources. The literature matrix compares your sources against your research questions, and every cell names the passage it rests on.
04 Writing
Switch the citation style, and every citation in the text follows.
Your texts cite your cards.
Write in Markdown with Pandoc citations. Typing [@ opens your sources and quote cards, and the citation takes the style of the project: APA, Chicago or DGPs.
Export to Word, to LaTeX for Overleaf, to PDF or to Markdown, each with the bibliography in your citation style.
05 Agents
This is the agent. It reads the same library I do.
Your agent works in your library.
The Agent tab runs Claude Code, Codex or Cursor on the subscription you already have. It answers from your cards and cites them. When you ask for a change, it writes into your notes and texts directly, and Undo takes back the whole turn.
cg mcp opens the library to Claude Desktop and any other MCP client, and the
cg command line runs every operation of the app with --json
output. Anything an agent adds lands in your inbox first.
Connecting agents
Terminal
# connect Claude Code to your library$ claude mcp add --scope user citegeist -- cg mcp# add a paper by DOI, then search your cards$ cg items add 10.48550/arXiv.1706.03762citekey: vaswani2017attentionjob: j_01JD4M2X8KQ$ cg search query "attention heads" --kinds card --json{ "hits": [{ "kind": "card", "citekey": "vaswani2017attention", "page": "5", "snippet": "Multi-head attention allows the model to jointly attend to information from different representation subspaces at different positions.", "score": 0.91 }] }
Open source
citegeist is open source and keeps your library on your Mac.
Apache-2.0
The whole app is on GitHub. You can read the code, build it yourself and contribute.
JonnyFi/citegeistLocal files
Your papers, cards and notes stay in your folder. The search index and the embedding models run on your Mac.
Your own AI
The AI runs on your Claude Code, Codex or Cursor subscription. An API key or a local Ollama works as well.
